Violins please.Getting well over 6,000 visitors a year, it would seriously cover the hosting bill if each of you donated as little as a penny! :-) (Though, naturally, you're encouraged to give more :-D )

Fred's Old School FDU

VIRTUAL WILDLIFE TOUR

Animals

So, you're wondering what kind of wildlife we have here. Well, besides the students (haha), we've got plenty. We have deer, racoons, skunks, chipmunks, and of course squirrels. The first day of May, 2002, we even had a black bear on campus (and we were warned to stay inside).

I love our devil mascot, but there really is something else that should represent us. FDU is notorious for GOPHERS (or ground hogs, which ever you prefer). They are all over campus. There is hardly ever a nice day that goes by in which you won't see one.

Getting them to pose for you is another story. This is as close as I could get to this one with my camera before he disappeared underground. Later I came across this one. He was a bit more understanding, and as such, allowed me to make a much closer approach.
Understanding- yes, cooperative- no. I pleaded with him to stand on his hind legs. I explained how I was going to make him famous and put him on my site. He would hear none of it, and soon went into his hole.

gopher3.jpg Frustrated, I later encountered this fellow. He was a little bit more playful. I walked up to him, and of course he went down his hole. I walked right up to his door and decided to wait for him to come back out, far enough back to remain unseen. He didn't, he knew I was waiting. So after a minute or two, I decided to peer into his home. Wouldn't you know he was sleeping! I started talking to him softly, telling him essentially what I told the other one earlier. He opened his eyes and started to come out to say "hi." It would have been a great pic, I was just about 2 feet away and he was starting to approach me. But wouldn't you know he got scared when I raised the camera and disappeared back down the hole! After a few minutes I found out the trickster was checking up on me from a hole a few feet behind me. We continued to play peek-a-boo for a few minutes until I got the above left shot.

One of the last days on campus, going back to my room, I came across this chipmunk. He had no problem with posing either, unlike those damn gophers.

BEWARE! As of the end of April, a fox has been spotted on the prowl. hehehe
